Final Fantasy is one of the longest running and most popular video game franchises in the world today, beloved by millions of gamers around the world! Originally supposed to be the swan-song of Hironobo Sakaguchi as his final effort at making a successful game, the gamble paid off and the first game in the series was a huge success! Sakaguchi had wanted to create an RPG style game throughout his career, but was denied by Square executives as it was thought that such games would not be very popular. However, after the success of Dragon Quest in Japan, Sakaguchi was finally given permission to create the game that he believed would be his very last - Hence the name "Final Fantasy". The NES game was a critical hit, and went on to spawn numerous sequels across various platforms, and is now considered an industry staple, as well as leaders in the JRPG genre. The series left Nintendo consoles prior to the release of Final Fantasy VII due to hardware limitations of the SNES and N64, with the seventh game being released on the Sony PlayStation on three CD-ROM discs! This game would be responsible for bringing JRPG's into the mainstream in the West, with the PlayStation 1 era games often cited as some of the best Final Fantasy games, and JRPG's, to date.
