The World Cup Golden Ball award has been around in various guises since the 1930 World Cup in Uruguay, being awarded to the most distinguished player of each World Cup tournament. In 1982 it was renamed the Adidas Golden Ball award for commercial reasons, and continues to be sponsored by the German sports apparel company. With the current World Cup finals under way, several potential contenders have already made their mark, notably Portuguese player, Cristiano Ronaldo, who scored an impressive hat-trick to equalize with Spain in their first game of the finals!
