The humble LEGO brick has recently celebrated its 60th birthday, having been first patented back in January 1958 by Godtfred Kirk Christiansen, son of Danish carpenter Ole Kirk Christiansen who founded the LEGO brand several decades earlier. Godtfred's father had previously created the LEGO company in order to manufacture wooden toys for children prior to WWII, but started experimenting with creating construction toys after the war in order to encourage a new generation to "build up". Godtfred took over the company from his father in the mid-50's, and started experimenting with new plastic materials in order to create a durable construction toy which was able to interlock. He finally decided upon ABS, and later patented his unique design which featured hollow tubes in order to allow bricks to "stick" together! The classic LEGO brick is now an iconic design that has inspired many generations of children to use their imaginations. The LEGO Group is still a family-run business, and is a household name worldwide! LEGO currently holds many accolades, such as the world's number one manufacturer of rubber tyres, as well as being the number one toy manufacturer, having overtaken Hasbro and Mattel! It is hard to deny the cultural impact that LEGO has had, especially in recent years having branched out into creating movies and video games! To celebrate the anniversary of the LEGO brick, here's a selection of Displate artwork by artist Xavier Vieiera, featuring several of LEGO's most iconic patent designs!
