The Masters Of The Universe 80's animated show was primarily created by Mattel as a vehicle to sell their line of action figures. After having previously declining the chance to produce merchandise for the Star Wars franchise (a decision that proved to be a huge mistake), Mattel struggled to launch several toy lines before coming up with the concept for Masters Of The Universe. Set on the fictional planet of Eternia, Prince Adam is granted special powers that transform him from an average man into the almighty He-Man - a muscular champion of Castle Grayskull! Along with other powerful heroes, he protects Eternia from Skeletor and his evil minions. The show proved to be an over-night hit, and achieved cult status almost instantly leading to a spin-off series, She-Ra: Princess Of Power, to be commissioned in order to appeal more to young girls. During the height of its popularity, Mattel commissioned a live-action feature film to be produced, starring Dolph Lundgren, Courteney Cox, and Robert Duncan McNeil, although the film was critically panned and failed to even make back its initial budget. The characters of He-Man and Skeletor have recently found their way back into popular culture promoting the services of Money Supermarket in the UK. To celebrate this cult classic, here's a selection of Displate artwork based on the Masters Of The Universe.
